When the children of Kids Rock! Day Care Center headed to this year’s Rock County Fair Day Care Day, they arrived cool, safe, and ready for fun, thanks to a helping hand from the Luverne Rotary Club. The Rotary Club recently donated $600 to Rock County Opportunities (RCO) to cover transportation for the day care’s children and staff to and from the fairgrounds. In all, RCO provided 224 trips, making sure that even the youngest attendees could take part in the day’s activities.
Without that transportation, the group would have faced a 2.6-mile round-trip walk to reach the fair — a long, hot trek for little legs on a summer day. Instead, RCO’s vehicles carried the children safely to the fairgrounds, where a full day of activities was waiting for them.

And a day at the county fair is more than just fun,  it’s one of the best hands-on classrooms a rural community has to offer. For many of the children, Day Care Day is an early introduction to livestock, agriculture, and the work that keeps Rock County growing. They meet the animals up close, begin to learn where their food comes from, and get a first look at the 4-H exhibits and farming traditions woven into the fabric of our region. Sparking that curiosity early helps raise a generation that understands and values agriculture, the backbone of our local economy.

The gift reflects several of the values the Luverne Rotary Club holds close. It supports the local economy by investing in a homegrown organization and one of the community’s signature summer events. It looks out for child health and safety by removing a real barrier — and a real risk — for some of the community’s youngest residents. It opens the door to education, giving young learners a memorable, real-world lesson in agriculture and community life. And it strengthens the community partnerships between Rotary, RCO, Kids Rock!, and the Rock County Fair that make projects like this possible.

It’s a modest investment with a big return: a fairground full of happy kids, and a community that keeps finding ways to look out for one another.
